Mandate and terms of reference
The Graduate Student Committee, or GSC, was formed in 1998. It mandate is always to reflect the views of, and address issues important to, graduate students across Canada. The GSC is made up of representatives of each one institution in Canada which has a graduate put in astronomy and chooses to join as well as an elected committee Chair and Secretary. The work of the Chair would be to represent the views and concerns in the committee on the CASCA Board of Directors, as the Secretary records minutes and ensures proper documentation Ray Ban sunglasses outlet with the GSC activities.
Contained in the GSC mandate to monitor equity and standing amongst Canadian Graduate Students, the Equity Officer has assembled a report on graduate funding across Canada.
Derived from one of coast to another, Canadian universities offer about 20 different graduate program in astronomy. Each of these institutions their very own tuition fees and funding rules. Most of all, graduate astronomy programs can be found in cities with vastly different cost of living. Graduate students are, usually, not part of a union when it comes to research (but they can be portion of a union as teaching assistant). As a result, they are not section of an organization that can help them know what is the situation like elsewhere for former pupils. Furthermore, relevant information is commonly lost quickly due to graduate students spending only a few years in the same place. This resulted in the present funding survey. Hopefully, it may bring present and future graduated pupils some relevant information.
Laptop computer itself consists in funding information from 15 different institutions. Living cost information was extracted from the website Numbeo crowd sourcing database including hundreds of entry for each city. References and details are included in the report.
The survey tries to be more comprehensive than previous ones by investigating major expenses for graduated pupils in each institutions. The types of expenses included are:
A note on international tuition is roofed when available, however the situation varies Ray Ban outlet between universities. Public transit is included using the tuition fees essentially universities but does add up to 500 1000$ 12 months when it isn't. For housing, a range is given for every city, the cheapest value represents somebody living not in the city core with 2 roommates as the higher value represents someone living alone within the city core. Internet, food and leisure expenses depend on conservative numbers detailed in the survey. Three scenarios are considered. Housing to be the largest single expense, the scenarios depend on the minimum, maximum and average with the housing range. The normal housing value obtained is mostly in good agreement in what a person should expect to pay to exist in the city core with 2 roommates or alone not in the city core. A stride of the disposable income can then be obtained by combining various funding and expenses scenarios.
Even though the first page in the report only summarizes the values for students with minimum funding in a average expenses scenario, more info are available for individual institutions. TA hours and salary contained in minimum funding, just how much a student will get for an additional TA position (and Ray Ban Sunglasses Wholesale associated disposable income) and total NSERC funding (and associated disposable income) receive for most of the universities.
Getting a very truth of graduate funding is usually very hard, particularly when done with a voluntary basis as it is the case because of this survey. The various readers should keep in your mind that there are limitations for the numbers obtained. For example, the distribution of funding when compared to the minimum and the availability of scholarships (NSERC or others) are not included.
It really is of the opinion with the Graduate Student Committee that survey should be kept updated that has been enhanced. It is also clear the minimum funding situation of graduate astronomy students differs throughout Canada. It must be kept in mind that, although the average funding may show an incredibly different picture, a non negligible fraction of graduated pupils have to live on minimum funding. Without having enough money in order to meet basic needs can be a huge source of stress. Additionally, it excludes individuals who may be effective at contributing in a meaningful method to research but who can't simply because they either do not want it or are extremely stressed to do good work because of finances.
Many thanks to all the graduated pupils, graduate chairs and also other department officials that provided the info necessary for the survey. Special because of Lisa Glass and Hannah Broekhoven Fiene for his or her help putting laptop computer together.
