Sugar tax could save 1600 lives

A 20 per cent tax on sugar sweetened beverages could save more than 1600 lives and raise at least $400 million annually for health initiatives, new Australian studies have shown.

The study, co writtenby the Obesity Policy Coalition and also the University of Queensland's School of Public Health, will be the first of this category to model Australian population data to evaluate the impact of an sugary drinks tax.

In the first 25 years of a sugary drinks tax there could be 16,000 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes, 4400 fewer installments Ray Ban outlet of heart disease and most 1000 fewer installments of stroke, in line with the study.

"This sort of study . provides evidence base needed to support policy decisions by government, like taxing sugary drinks," said Obesity Policy Coalition executive manager Jane Martin, who co wrote the study.

"It's quite difficult to have a policy that's likely to reduce body mass index, because Ray Ban outlet it is quite challenging for people to lose weight. This is a policy proposal that could support individuals to consume less sugary drinks, resulting in reduced BMIs, reduced incidences of disease and after that reduced deaths."

In accordance with the study, a tax nationwide could lead to a 12.6 per cent reduction in consumption of sugary drinks, the largest contributors of added sugars in Australians' diets.

The most important consumers are among males aged 19 to Thirty years, consuming up to 1.5 litres per day, while the best per cent of consumers drink many litre a day (including diet drinks). In 2015 Australians purchased around 1.1 billion litres of sugary drinks at the total cost of $2.2 billion, excluding those purchased at fast food outlets, vending Ray Ban Sunglasses Discount machines and supermarkets.

Ms Martin said Australia's consumption rates highlighted the amount of money that could be raised for health initiatives.

"The tax at one end saves lives, improves quality of life, raises revenue and eventually reduces healthcare costs."

The investigation findings come only weeks following your British government announced it would introduce a sugar levy on soft drinks from 2018, Ray Ban Sale moving which prompted demands the Australian government to adhere to suit.

Anurag Sharma is a senior research fellow in the Monash University Centre for Health Economics, whose studies have outlined the possible impact a tax would have across different income groups.

He said his research showed the responsibility of the tax was "almost negligible".

"Low income individuals would cut back consumption probably the most and they would function as most Ray Ban Wayfarer 90% off to profit in terms of weight-loss."

In 2014, Mr Sharma and the team compared a 20 percent flat rate sales (valoric) tax plus a 20a litre volumetric tax.

Their research showed the common yearly per capita tax burden on low income households was $17.87 weighed against $15.17 for high income households for that valoric tax, and $13.80 and $10.10 for that volumetric tax.

"We found the volumetric tax to get more effective in cutting obesity, because those heavy drinkers usually buy multipacks which can be cheaper," Mr Sharma said.

"Money raised with a tax works extremely well in many ways, like subsidising health food for your poor, or fitness education programs. We find politicians are sceptical relating to this tax because beverage industry say they are going to affect the poor, but we discover that is not true."

He was quoted saying he was positive Australia will in the end follow the road to countries such as Mexico, Hungary and also the UK in applying a sugar tax.

"We were from the same situation for tobacco 20, Three decades ago and yes it was unthinkable, however society changed."

Research commissioned with the Obesity Policy Coalition last year suggested 85 per cent of Australians would support sugar tax revenue being allocated to anti obesity measures.

The Obesity Policy Coalition was established by the Cancer Council Victoria, Diabetes Australia   Victoria, VicHealth as well as the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University.
