A LOCAL truck driver has warned grocery bills will skyrocket if owner drivers are priced out of the market with a union backed wage hike.
The warning may come as employment minister Michaelia Cash joined your struggle between the Transport Workers Union and native drivers who might be forced to sell trucks they bought with mortgages on their family homes.
Robert McInerney, who runs a variety of 12 trucks beyond Tumut, has joined the chorus of independently employed truck drivers in Wagga predicting the path Safety Remuneration Tribunal's mandatory price formula would remove all financial incentives for large fleets to sub contract make an effort to small players.
"Owner drivers will become too expensive and larger freight companies won't give us the Ray Ban outlet work they'll give all try to union employee drivers," Mr McInerney said.
"I don't think Australia realises that when the trucking industry should charge far more money it's going to impact on everyone; mums and dads at the grocery store up to industry.
"It won't close down my company but it have a large impact on the future employment of my local drivers."
Mr McInerney echoed Adelong's Bunny Brown, president with the Australian Long-distance Owners and Drivers Association, who backed an interest rate rise, as long as it applied over the whole industry.
"Our minute rates are not adequate and the time we need to do a job just isn't long enough; all this needs straightening up so everyone produces a quid out it," Mr Brown said.
"So we supported the mandatory rates, till they singled out the owner drivers making it it so that they can't compete against union employee drivers.
"If an owner driver's mortgaged everything to get a new truck, he owes a few hundred thousand and after this he'll don't have any job.
"And who would want to buy Ray Ban sale $19.99 those trucks? It's not good buying something can't use."
