A shop opened approximately four years ago afterrepresentatives from high-street names, including H Sports Direct and Lush, were invited on the town as potential investors.
The building's owner, Donald Dixon,hailed the shop's opening next year and the creation of eight jobs as "thefuture of Whitehaven".
The actual store is closing, Mr Dixon said he is not downbeat about the company's decision and it is in negotiations with high street brands to fill the store.
"Brands come and ray ban sale go," said Mr Dixon. "Miss Selfridge said they may only keep one shop in west Cumbria along with the shop in Dunmail Park was doing a lot superior to this one.
"But when shops close, others appear in and prosper. Topshop is part of the same company plus the same cheap ray ban uk building they may be very happy using shop here. It's one of the things the shops remain but just what they are called change."
"Trading conditions remain extremely challenging, but fashionability, quality and expense are still a definite priority for people."
Mr Dixon said Whitehaven's shopping economy faces challenges for example the phasing in of the brand new 'living wage' and the growth of online shopping, but insisted it is "not oakley sunglasses cheap 90% off the end" for high street shopping.
