Google Glass comes with an image problem.
Since its debut a couple of years ago, the thought of the wraparound eye level device has devolved from interesting futuristic gizmo to invasive spywear tool, despised by privacy advocates and banned in several bars and casinos. Google Inc. even had to post online suggestions to help customers observe proper etiquette.
Now Yahoo is scoping out an industry segment that may boost sales while making a more mainstream image: prescription eyeglass wearers. Google recently joined with three eye health care providers including two in Southern California to sell its Glass wearable device right to the public.
Wink Optometry in Calabasas and Optometrix in Brentwood are letting their clients try out Google Glass, if they like what they see, get it mounted on traditional looking prescription frames.
Bing is betting on customers who already wear glasses to upgrade their spectacles to present day smart glasses. And also on Thursday, Google named Ivy Ross, former president of Calvin Klein's men's accessories business and executive vp of marketing for Gap, because new head of the Glass team.
"If you're already wearing glasses, it isn't really a decision you really whether you're going to wear glasses or otherwise," said Insiya Lokhandwala, a member of Google's Glass business team of developers. That's what concerns privacy advocates. Although traditional frames may make Google Glass wearers less obvious, they just don't directly affect the privacy issue. The bars, restaurants and casinos that ban Google Glass say they're protecting customer privacy. Whether traditional frames could make it easier for Glass wearers to sneak past bouncers has to be seen.
"With a cellphone camera it's pretty obvious when someone is providing strength to their camera and recording you," said Jeremy Gillula, staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a consumer digital rights group. "If something like Google Glass becomes popular, you will never tell if someone is recording. Potentially, we'll have everyone recording everything everybody else does in public places all the time."
Frames for your prescription glasses are within the $1,500 asking price. Lens prices are separate. Major eye care insurer VSP Vision Care says it's going to cover section of the cost, depending on a customer's benefit plan.

JR Curley, 42, of Manhattan Beach, said he's been utilizing Glass for seven months, but got the special frames and lenses for your device a month ago. Curley said he wears Glass constantly.
"They're an extension of my everyday now. They're so easy to use," said Curley, who uses the unit that is wirelessly associated with his smartphone to adopt pictures, send and receive texting and check his email.
Google has limited distribution in the device, however week it announced that the beta version can be obtained to the general public online.
