The Penyo Pal team, including student members and designers, are working on an app that will teaches people to speak Chinese.
In June the Penyo Pal quartet was one of eight start off ups from across The united states, and the only one selected on the Next 36, invited to offer its app   a cell game teaching users to speak Mandarin   at a Microsoft occurrence in the San Francisco Bay area technology center. They were named best Phase 1 start up at the occurrence.
Next week Penyo Pal is one of 4 Next 36 teams welcomed to participate in an event financed by the Canadian Consulate in Big apple where early stage businesses made by this country will connect with United states investors and venture capitalists.
Another 36 has a high profile set of patrons including Canadian company giants Galen Weston, Jim Pattison and Chris Desmarais, and a board of owners that includes Rogers Communications president and CEO Nadir Mohamed. That it was established in September This year as a mechanism for discovering top entrepreneurial talent amid students at universities around the world and presenting them with opportunities and experiences intended to take full advantage of their abilities   and raise their own expectations for themselves.
Thirty six school university students and undergrads were selected for the program, and categorized into four person clubs whose members have unique skills in areas like business studies or pc engineering.
It's a novel angle on business accelerator applications such as Vancouver's GrowLab which take a opt for group of high tech start up upward companies, provide them with workspace and hands on mentoring to speed the development. The program this week begun accepting applications for its autumn 2013 program.
Fan's group's very first project idea was a cellular phone for specifically designed for senior citizens, but they determined through general market trends that older consumers did not have interest.
"Right now we're developing a mobile game to teach young children, and kids at heart, languages,Inch Fan told The Vancouver Sun. "We're using games so it will be more of a fun and engaging knowledge to interest kids to learn languages, starting with Mandarin and ultimately we want to expand into German and Spanish and other different languages that are also popular.
"Our aim is to have a full electronic world where a kid can easily customize their own little virtual pet. This pet is almost their guide in this world. They might play games with it, take care of it, and at the same time they can be picking up language skills through tiny mini games.
"Right now we've been testing out little games very first to see what sticks, which of them have more traction, and eventually we want to integrate Division Two everything into a better made environment."
The project will be "very personal" to Fan, who finished SFU in April with a combined major in business and 'interaction designs'   a relatively new field associated with study that explores ways of bridging the gap between men and women and technology.
In her quartet   that is augmented by a cluster of developers as the project gets momentum   she's the chief imaginative officer. Fan has interviewed parents teachers and kids in regards to the game to see which aspects of them are the most popular.
"My parents immigrated through China many years ago and it seemed to be very important to them that I retained a cultural connection, as well as knew how to speak the language. So I was sent to Chinese language [language] school for 12 a long time, for two hours every single Sunday.
"The methods they used were being old school methods where I might memorize vocabulary, do incredibly repetitive exercises. A lot of people would certainly drop out and just never understand the language.
"Many people even now are not able to speak to their grandparents. There's a big loss in that. You should create a way for kids to generally be interested and be motivated, to remain learning Chinese or anything other language their mothers and fathers speak."
As it turns out, all members of the group graduated this particular spring and they worked so well together that they've decided to continue to try to build the company.
"I've been incredibly, very lucky with the those who have come together in my group. We have a network [in Toronto] in terms of getting web developers and designers on board full-time once the program is over. There's been interest from investors, and also down in Silicon Area as well."
The program's final event takes place in core August.
"Our goal is to acquire top undergraduates   the most appealing, 2013By JIM CAMERON  Spot 69 driven, high achieving, revolutionary undergraduates at a really essential point in their lives   and offer them an really amazing set of experiences and human relationships that will change the trajectory of their careers," executive home Claudia Hepburn said.
Last year's cohort, the 1st ever, raved about the program, Hepburn stated.
"To an individual they said that this appeared to be the most transformative experience of their particular lives. A hundred per cent advisors said that nine months in the following 36 was as impactful or in most cases much more influential than their four years of college or university and that they are all applying the coaching they've learned through The Next 36   the networks, a connections, the life skills, as well as raised aspirations they have in their own business to everything they are targeting."
