"I observed an opportunity to give back to LCC,Inches said Schabot, who teaches talk communications. "That's where I got my love of teaching. And Mike's a huge ideas, with his excitement and desire for debate."
Dugaw started instructing at LCC in 1973 plus semi retired last early spring, when he was honored because faculty emeritus. He's still instruction the school's "Fighting Smelt" debate staff, so Schabot is in the rare posture of replacing his teacher in the classroom while functioning alongside him as a guru.
Dugaw said Schabot is the perfect choice, and then he told LCC President Chris Bailey the same.

Schabot, 37, came to LCC around 1993 by accident. While any senior at Rogers High School with Puyallup, where he had done argument for a year, he heard a scholarship was on offer at LCC. Knowing nothing about the college, he and a friend driven down on a whim and ran into debater Shannon Valdivia at the door of the employed arts building.
"She said, 'Oh, all of you want to debate! Stay below until I find Mike Dugaw.'" Schabot said. "We talked and he offered us a scholarship."
While competitive 114 S Janice Boyd 650 in debate at the Jr . College Nationals, Schabot said a teacher "watched me in a round and said, 'Call me if you want a scholarship grant,'"
Schabot made the call and later acknowledged a $1,200 scholarship for you to Arkansas State University, where tuition was $1,275 one fourth, and earned his college in speech communication as well as a master's degree in dialog communication and theater arts there.

Before coming to LCC Schabot trained speech and coached discussion at Cameron University in Fort Sill, Okla. Last year the students decided on him as faculty member of the year.
"It was neat being honored by the students generally there," he said.
He said he loves being back in Longview, when they have an apartment a short walk through the college.
"There's changes in the community nevertheless it all feels really recognizable," he said.
This fall Schabot is teaching introduction to formal presentations and small group communication. He's thinking of offering a class in the rhetoric of pop culture, which he tutored at Cameron. Schabot takes delight in many forms of popular culture, including DC brand comics, some of which decorate his office.
"I coach kids to look for persuasive communications in various forms of popular culture, such as blogs and presidential messages," he said. "One of the things I'm sure I can do is support students understand the culture from the new media age."
Another thing he'd like to do is usually let his students provide one on one speech coaching towards the general student population and even perhaps the public, similar to something he did as an LCC student.

He could be looking forward to assisting Dugaw in teaching the Fighting Smelt.
