When Tommy Hunter received a call about two weeks ago appealing him to play on a group of major leaguers in the All Star Series exhibition this four week period in Japan, the Orioles reduction pitcher said the choice was easy.
The Orioles recently have been eliminated in the American Team Championship Series and, while a good many players spend this the main offseason recovering from a long baseball year, Hunter jumped at the prospect.
"I thought it was a pretty easy conclusion whether to go or not proceed," Hunter said. "I decided not to think it took much of a thought at all. You get to have a different culture. You get to notice a different country. My wife [Ellen] actually gets to go. It's a good experience either way of us.
"We don't have anything attaching us down. We don't have little ones yet. This is the time in our lives when we need to get around as well as do everything we can do just before we settle down and start a family group. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity kind of deal."
The team will play a five game series from Japan's national team, Samurai Japan, and two additional exhibition games. The key leaguers will play against a joint group of the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri The big players on Tuesday to kick off your trip. Select games are going to be broadcast on MLB Circle.
Hunter is the Orioles' only person on the roster. Center fielder Adam Smith originally was expected to have fun with, but he had to eliminate because of other commitments.
