Happy to cut for the chase

Both spent a while kicking up dirt on the back road in Griffith Park, burning out the car's clutch, driving with two wheels around the curb and stripping lifespan out of a very sad emergency brake.

"I got all the insurance!" shouted Conley, 48, in the back seat. "The most I'll have to pay should it be totaled is $500."

Your, he took over and was Ray Ban Sale skidding downhill toward a reverse 180 when a ranger's truck turned up in the distance. Conley and Graham calmed down, like teenagers whose mom had caught them sneaking flat stomach of beer. They began rehearsing what you should say when they were stopped.

"Good thing nobody is saucin'," offered Graham.

Stunt driving isn't everybody's thought of a good time, but Conley   a brief, rotund New Yorker in geek chic Ray ban sunglasses glasses and black T-shirt   thrilled to his friend's down home insouciance and stories of crashes and near misses.

"Actors are invariably smaller than life," he said, after Graham left within a whirlwind of tall tales. He means not only physical stature but presence   actors often blend in the background or observe others. "But the stuntmen would be the actual sexy guys about the set. So the reaction you expect a movie star to get you often get from a stuntman. It's real theater."

Graham, who did Mark Wahlberg's stunts in "The Italian Job," was one of hundreds of stuntmen Conley met while writing "The Full Burn: Ray-ban Wayfarer About the Set, with the Bar, Behind the Wheel and Over the sting With Hollywood Stuntmen." The novel tells the field's history mostly through magazine profiles of stunt stars and was just released by Bloomsbury.

Conley's recurring subject is "the passionate subculture," using its own argot, personal code and price system.

"I love to make accessible an incredibly arcane art," he explained later with a downtown restaurant, "and make people appreciate what you will never see."

He's spent part of his career covering dance and it is interested in capturing your body in motion. "With stunts it's kind of like male choreography. It's macho dance."

Leaving school behind

We were young in Detroit, Conley was keen on Latin and Ingmar Bergman, as both versions he studied at Ray Ban sunglasses outlet Yale, than gear head chatter. But he acquired car talk "by osmosis," whether he wanted to or not.

After college, he was a kind of stunt journalist: He spent Ten years or so in Ny, producing clever, bemused pieces on poker, roller coasters and NASCAR and writing "Stud: Adventures in Breeding." (He describes the amorous emissions of Storm Cat, whose stud fee, at his peak, located $500,000, as "probably the costliest 30 seconds" in sports.)

Conley met Graham along with other stuntmen while doing a New Yorker story on the movie called "The Punisher," according to a Marvel Comics character. "Full Burn"   the category of a fiery stunt Conley's tried himself   also talks about Jeff Galpin, a wily Cajun who wrangles gators; Mike Kirton, a hard drinking wild man who's legally died on sets twice; and Debbie Evans, "the Meryl Streep of stunts," who's triumphed within the field's institutional sexism.

Despite some variation, the stuntman type is actually comparatively consistent, in accordance with Conley.

"They're more sophisticated than most athletes," he was quoted saying. "Because for many of which, their careers start a certain disappointment, either simply because they found the best in a sport that has no market or they've stood a crushing injury.

"Terry Leonard had given away his within the [Canadian Football League], so he arrived with a a feeling of mortality, even while he did thousands of stunts on film. He's the individual who cheap Ray Ban Wayfarer went within the truck in 'Raiders with the Lost Ark.' "

And also, since working stunts   or "gags" as they have been called since the Keystone Kops   means a lot of waiting around on film sets, stuntmen tend to be gregarious and imaginatively prankish. (Their marriages, perhaps for related reasons, typically don't go very far.) The downtime also leads these phones hone skills as storytellers, which benefits Conley's book.

"It's like every locker room," he explained, "but they're better because they have got time to perfect it. They call the things they're doing 'gags,' when they're not doing one on set they're trying them out on the other person. The film clip of the pranks would be as good as the clips of their stunts."

Using the new guys

Section of what made Conley believe he previously a book was researching the evolution in the field. That old days of stunting, he was quoted saying, were wild. "Like a lot of American industry, it had been very dangerous, carelessly approached, haphazard   it's familiar if you ask me from Detroit." To get a sense of what the period was like, he means the oil drilling mishap that begins "There Will probably be Blood."

"People have a very vision of the crazy stuntman who drank and was devil may care and did crazy things   well, half the continent was that way. Everyone was performing a three martini lunch."
