Baywatch Star Gena Lee Nolan on How to Spot Symptoms for Thyroid Disease

You may remember her among those red swimsuit wearing hotties running in slow motion for the hit 1990's show Baywatch. Currently, Gena Lee Nolan is on the crusade to save lives just like her character but it is not on the beach. Nolan is one of 22 million Americans who are suffering from weight gain, fatigue, thinning hair, and other symptoms brought on by poor thyroid function. C = continual reporting of her hit Television show, no matter how little she ate and how much she exercised, Nolan continued to achieve weight. Her once silky blonde hair became dry and brittle, and she was constantly tired.

From a long journey, the actress discovered she is suffering from Hashimoto's disease, when Ray Ban sunglasses the immune system attacks and in the end destroys the thyroid. It took more than 10 years not to mention the development of increasingly frightening symptoms for doctors to learn what was really wrong with her.

In honor of World Thyroid Day (Friday, May 25th), Nolan has teamed up with Dr. They're raising awareness to get a disease that's actually more prevalent than diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer to help the huge numbers of people who remain undiagnosed and untreated.

We spoke one-on-one with Nolan and Christianson to learn how to see whether you're in danger of this disease along with what to do over it.

SHAPE: Let's move on with Dr. Christianson. Could you give us a review of what exactly thyroid disease is?

Dr. Christianson (DC): It's actually a condition in that the thyroid gland makes all the incorrect quantity of hormones for the body's needs. Mostly it makes inadequate hormone, but it can also make a lot of. This effects how every cell by the body processes forms energy.

SHAPE: Who's most vulnerable and how do they know if they must get tested?

DC: Thyroid disease affects eight times numerous women as men. It can happen any time in life, but it gets more prevalent with age and is especially common after pregnancy or menopause.

SHAPE: Which are the warning signs?

DC: You should be on the lookout for new and chronic unexplained symptoms like weight gain, baldness, fatigue, muscle pain, constipation, irregular menstrual cycles, and depression. Also, someone that is seemingly 'binge' eating and should not control it points towards some blend of poor blood glucose control, glandular abnormalities, and unresolved psychological stressors.

SHAPE: After I had my daughter, a friend who works in healthcare warned me some women can get thyroid disorders after pregnancy and suggested I recieve tested. Would you

think this is a legitimate concern?

DC: During or after pregnancy are extremely common times for thyroid disease ahead on. When pregnant there are big swings in estrogen and progesterone as well as changes in how the immune system works. Many of these factors strain the thyroid and make it quit functional in people who find themselves susceptible to it.

SHAPE: Now a few questions for Gena: The fact that was it like living in Hollywood using this type of disease and working grueling hours on set?

Gena Lee Nolan (GLN): I enjoy working in such an exciting industry, but while you're on a Tv show, it's very difficult dealing with the symptoms I'd. The most frustrating part was i did not know the thing that was making me so ill.

SHAPE: How did you finally find out you'd it?

It's extremely frustrating to become told that you are fine, when clearly you just aren't! I was experiencing weight pros and cons, anxiety, tremors, and more. SHAPE: Besides medication, do you fight your disease through dieting and exercise? If so, exactly what are your favorite physical exercises? Any special diets you follow?

GLN: I have been gluten free for over a year now, i love! Juicing 3 x a week and eating clean assists a lot also. I try to go into at least three to four days of exercising per week. Some weeks I would not do anything at allI use how I feel!
