A consultant's sewer report backs the city's claims that will failing septic systems in Region D are contributing to weak water quality.

Areas with increased nitrate and nitrite and high bacteria numbers were Finch Road, Peak Drive near Engles Road, Caddisfly Creek right after Stuart Place, Anton Road near the Southern area Island Highway and Surfside Commute. Three areas had solely high nitrate and nitrate concentrations when seven had high microorganisms counts only.
Area Debbie director Brenda Leigh said the consultant's record does not tell the whole narrative.
"Water sampling in our ditches is not a grounds for extrapolating that any fecal is important found are human along with connected to any septic problems," Leigh said. "Only DNA tests can be that."
Leigh also noted that Nancy Clements, an environmental health officer with Island Health, publicly confirmed at a boundary extendable open house Feb. 29 that her office lacks the record of any septic failures throughout Area D.
"It is her job to ensure that public wellbeing regulations are upheld and you can bet that she would have received issues and taken action if clearly there was a problem," Leigh said.
Leigh explained the city should be basing it's decision to extend its southeast boundary to provide city sewer line service to northern Area Deborah homes on more than a good outdated report.
