"I halted the lessons after a year but kept playing for fun and also would make up little reports on the fly," she discussed in a recent email appointment. Musically speaking, Yamagata's songs are decidedly musical affairs. Pianos play prominently on the mix, but it's Yamagata's lush, lilting vocals that repeatedly steal the actual show. She attributes the girl's songwriting approach to her love of musical technology theater and finds their self drawn to romantic production tactics and "setting a scene" with her vocals. As such, her songs make a mistake on the side of heartbreak and healing, usually punctuated by her mix of sexy and trembling deliveries.
