Oregon's favorite folk sisters not too long ago returned from "band camp." Thankfully, stories that could steer into American Pie's "This one time, after i was at band camp" territory tend not to end with sticky gkasses but with the Shook Boy twins recording their fourth cd What We Do with producer Jones Hadlock. Hadlock is the same dude behind Your Lumineer's self titled, Grammy nominated file (remember the summer of 2012's "Ho Hey" frenzy?). The Shook Twins web host an album release get together Friday, May 2, in McDonald Theatre.
"We're kinda buddies using the Lumineers," Katelyn Shook tells me on the from the band's tour bus. "We played a show with them before many people warped to level Ten. They played in our underground room one night in Portland.Inches From this friendship, they were in the position to reach out to Hadlock.
Before long, the band seemed to be recording at Hadlock's Bear Creek Studio outside Seattle. "It's similar to this old barn totally remade directly into this multimillion dollar business," Shook says, lovingly remembering a nearby creek along with chirping frogs (they make a cameo with "Toll Free")."We all stayed de in deze gas aangedreven up there in concert."
And "We" has transformed from the twins (Laurie is the partner)   who, combined, provide verse, guitar, glockenspiel, mandolin, banjo, bass, ocarina, djembe and beatboxing   to a five person outfit together with Anna Tivel on fiddle in addition to mando, Kyle Volkman on upright bass as well as Niko Daoussis on mando, electric guitar and drum system.
"This is the first album now we have drums on," Shaken says. "Electric guitar too. It provides a little bit more soul and rock y, groovy style." The album's theme is loosened; when pushed, Shook suggests it ranges from love to the apocalypse. "There are a couple of love songs, that's atypical for us," she claims. The upbeat "end of the world" ditty "Shake" was already released on USA Today's web page.
There's no doubt that the Shook movie star is rising fast, yet the wedding band still eschews the conventional record content label route; they raised $26,1000 via Kickstarter to produce What We Complete. "It's an excellent pas vous gêner way to make a record," Shook says. "You can get backing from your fans parce que je ne préfère la langue italienne 57 and build it together. Record labels carry such a big cut. This is exactly why we decided to do it."
Fruition, another Portland folks rock favorite, joins your Shook Twins for the first time in the McDonald. "We are really good friends," Shaken says of the two bands. "We've been recently trying Uten laget 26 so hard to do a number of co bills with them for many years."
