More should be done to make students feel comfortable reporting bullying and lift awareness on what counts because bullying, an Illawarra education police officer said.

Mrs Tarrant said instructors and parents also needed to be absolutely clear on what constituted bullying to ensure it was recognised.
''We have to be clear by what it is and what it isn't. Violence is typically repeated, there is an asymmetry of power, and that is usually through age, gender, incapability, anything like that, and it has to get deliberate.''
The research will be presented on the Australian Institute of Household Studies conference next week.
