Staff Sgt. Carlos McCarroll is a squad leader at the Players Transition Unit at Fortin Leonard Wood in Missouri, where Vella is recuperating. He's the medic too.
"He went to warfare and did his work," McCarroll said, noting which being a medic sometimes means going in harm's way. "As a medic, he's doing his occupation. Everyone who's not a team will say that's daring. And it is."
It was not an easy year. Vella and his girlfriend, an Army emergency room medic, lost their baby through a losing the unborn baby. His grandfather died. They got hurt.
"He's a 20 year-old who's seen enough. He could be seen a bunch," McCaroll said. "He's had a lifetime of experiences.Inch
Three months after Vella's injury, his platoon was hit again. Spc. Steven Gutowski, Initial Lt. Ivan Lechowich and Pfc. David Drake were killed. Vella believed them all. Lechowich helped him manage the miscarriage. Gutowski was among the injured soldiers Vella helped inside the armored truck.
