Two days ago, an advert for the designer contraceptive pill Yasmin   which claimed to help women avoid weight gain and give them a sense of well being   was withdrawn.

The MCA is responsible for regulating the promotion of medicines, but thousands of women in the UK who continue to take Yasmin   and around a million women worldwide   may well disagree with its criticism of the advertisement's claims.

'It is not unusual for women to come back to us and say that Yasmin is the best contraceptive option they've had so far,' pandora jewelry outlet says Dr Diana Mansour, head of fertility services for Newcastle Primary Care Trust.

'Some of the other contraceptive pills they've been on have made them feel awful. Women have not only put on weight but have felt moody, too.'

In fact, between 40 per cent and 60 per cent of women who go on the Pill give it up within the first two years. Many do so because of weight gain and side effects such as mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches and greasy skin.

Yasmin contains oestrogen and a new form of progestogen called drospirenone, which is said to be closer to the natural form of the hormone.

Drospirenone also acts as a diuretic, increasing the production of urine and helping the body lose excess fluid that may have accumulated in the tissues. It is this excess fluid which causes feelings of bloating   common when a woman is pre menstrual.

'If you ask women why they give up taking the pill, it is usually the side effects, or perceived sideeffects, and one of those is weight gain,' says Dr Mansour.

So what exactly has happened with Yasmin? Is it the perfect pill   or have the manufacturers got it wrong?

In June 2000, trials on more than 2,000 women compared Yasmin with Microgynon and Marvelon   the two main contraceptive pills used in the UK.

All three pills were found to regulate periods well. But women using Marvelon and Yasmin also showed improvement in acne symptoms.

But the most remarkable finding was that women taking Yasmin lost between 1lb 10oz and 3lb 10oz over a 12 month period, while those on Microgynon gained 1lb 8oz and those on Marvelon gained 7oz.

Nevertheless, the MCA claim that some doctors are reporting their patients are gaining weight, not losing it   and so the advertisement was deemed misleading (although the MCA is not criticising the product itself).
