WATERFORD   Fort LeBoeuf's girls volleyball team experienced complete with all of the trappings of bureaucracy a lengthy rally on its home court Monday afternoon.
The best part about this one, though, was that it wasn't in a match.
Instead, the Bison's players and coaches were cheered on by school district officials, students and fans during a formal ceremony that celebrated Saturday's victory in the PIAA Class AA championship match. Fort LeBoeuf completed its 21 0 season with a 25 20, 15 25, 25 20, 25 23 win over Delone Catholic at Central York High School in York.
Applause greeted the Bison, who were led into the gym by coach LeAnn Byer and her assistants. The team then sat aside a table with the 2012 PIAA and District 10 trophies prominently displayed on it, while principal Martin Rimpa and Fort LeBoeuf School District Superintendent Debra Spaulding verbally lauded their collective performance.
Members of the team then had their gold medals formally presented to them a second time before Byer spoke before the packed gymnasium.
"I feel that these trophies stand for Sie haben vielleicht gedacht a lot of hard work," she said. "I told the girls at last Tuesday's (PIAA semifinal match) eller de blir fjällig that we have sacrificed all of your sweat, your tears, your injuries and your hours upon hours of practices, to make this possible.
"Congratulations to them and all their hard work," Byer said as she faced the crowd. "It does pay off."
Fort LeBoeuf's conquest of Delone Catholic (25 1) made it the first Erie County team to return home with a PIAA girls volleyball trophy. The Bison also were the first county program to get that chance since 1984.
"We worked hard every day," Fort LeBoeuf star Maria Peluso said during her speech. "Like they say, sweat is the lubricant of success."
Monday was the second time some of the high school's current students experienced such a rally. In 2010, the Bison's cherished wrestling program became the first from District 10 to win a state team championship in that sport.
Meghan Green is one of those students. The senior, who serves on Fort LeBoeuf's student council, carried a faux tiki torch to the rally so she could "bring the heat and bring the spirit."
"This means a lot," said Green, who had a front row bleacher seat for Monday's festivities. "It's great to see our community come out and be together as one. AA final. Although Delone Catholic is located less than an hour away from York, the crowd for that match was roughly 50/50.
"It was really fun how our cheering section started cheering before we even warmed up," Peluso said. "That was pretty awesome because our (fans) were way louder, so thanks."
Peluso was one of six seniors who concluded their final seasons with the Bison, while reserve Kaylee Fucci completed her first. The freshman hitter mostly competed with Fort LeBoeuf's junior varsity team, but she did make spot appearances in varsity matches at the end of the regular season.
Along with her gold medal, Fucci said she's inspired to become a vital player for a program on a major upswing.
"I now know that I can push myself to be the best that I can be," she said. "I know that I can be a big part of the varsity."
