WKOW was the first TV station in Madison, Wisconsin, established Summer 30, 1953.The history of WKOW Television set begins in 1947 together with the formation of Monona Broadcasting Organization, led by a group of nearby businessmen. Stuart Watson was the President with the Board, E. Huiscamp and Otto Sanders were all Board Directors.Monona Broadcasting Firm began with WKOW radio perfectly located at the heart of Madison, at 215 West Washington. The radio station gathered strength during it is first six years, using mainstream programming, local capabilities and its affiliation with the top broadcast network at the time, Cbs television studios.Stuart Watson and the Board immediately tried for a television license right after WKOW radio station began operations. On the other hand, in 1946 the FCC put a national freeze on new the required permits, so Monona Broadcasting Company would need to wait over six many years.As the final days of a freeze came to an end, Monona Broadcasting Company hired Mike Henry, an ancient attorney from St. Louis, having connections to CBS, to be General Manager of WKOW radio and television.In the old times Stuart Watson and his Board admitted to make a number of mistakes, notably seeking the call letters KOW for the airwaves and later the television stations. "We thought we were being darn smart, choosing these letters, associating the station with a barnyard. You see what mistakes you may make when you don know what anyone doing?" Twenty-five years later, reflecting on the day, Chris Henry said, "Well, we put that station on the air. His major goals provided, getting on the air first around Madison, assembling a staff, acquiring tools and a plant, and positioning the operation in the dark.The most expensive decision was regardless of if the new station should be just a site for the transmitter of system programs, or should WKOW develop studios for live encoding?
