"A notice of complaint has been brought to the Director General with the BBC making it clear that the broadcaster may have contravened it's editorial guidelines."
The force added that this would now welcome a search into the original leak.
Some sort of BBC spokeswoman said: "A BBC journalist approached South Yorkshire Police with more knowledge about the investigation. The BBC agreed to follow normal journalistic practice instead of to publish a story that might jeopardise any police inquiry."
