The struggle for Egypt continues

Cook: The struggle for Egypt continues

Editor Note:Steven A. Cook is the Hasib J. Sabbagh Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Recommendations an excerpt from his new book,The Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square.

Hassan was giddy, anything not often used to describe him. Not merely was he relieved that Egypt's long nightmare had finally come to an end and the prospects of freedom were seemingly much better than at any moment in the previous six decades, but Hassan must have felt vindicated (though he's oakley holbrook too polite to boast regarding it).

He has not been among the organizers of the protests with his fantastic activism had not been as much talked about as many others, but Hassan had worked tirelessly to boost awareness among his network of Egyptian and foreign contacts from the perfidy of the Mubarak regime. He was also entirely correct on another level, having little patience to the claim that Egypt's political system was stable thereby durable. Hassan argued quite the contrary; that it was a property of cards built only with a foundation of fear, which has been meaningless once Egyptians could no longer be intimidated. He could not predict when that might happen, but he believed it had been inevitable.

It didn't take long, however, for Hassan's great desires for the future to turn sour. Within thirty six hours of Mubarak's flight to Sharm el Shaykh and ignominy, Hassan was back on the computer using up his keyboard. His first dispatch was titled "Hoax" and mixed Hassan's typical bravado with painful and sudden disillusion:

believe a huge conspiracy will be perpetrated against the people of Egypt."

"Following almost three weeks of nationwide protests ultimately causing the apparent downfall of a dictator, jubilation fills the streets of Egypt, essentially drugging the people into believing they have really become free. They're convinced their interim government will truly keep its promises and steer them peacefully to the democracy everyone so valiantly competitive . . . Egypt will remain a military dictatorship indefinitely. Generate income wish I'm wrong."

This message was surely due to that "revolutionary hangover" that observers had expected. All things considered, uncertainty breeds fear. Yet in the weeks and months after Mubarak's departure, Hassan remained deeply concerned over the ebb and flow of events. First and foremost, he was worried about the senior military commanders, whom he quite correctly tied straight away to Mubarak.

They were, indeed, his officers although they ultimately pushed the president from office, these were loyal to him to some fault. Mubarak had threatened their cherished order nine days before his departure while he released thugs on Tahrir Square, but the military stood aside during the chaos and bound to their dictator.

To make certain, there were bright moments for Hassan. For example, when the revolutionary groups forced the resignation of Mubarak's last prime minister and loyal servant, Ahmed Shafiq, on March 3, Hassan's outlook improved considerably. He was under no illusions, however; he never belief that Egypt's transition will be easy, but he have also been well aware that remnants in the National Democratic Party, portions of the police, state security agents   despite the State Security Investigations was abolished on March 15   business interests, and the military would do what you could to salvage the old regime.

That's the reason he voted "no" within the March 19 referendum. Hassan, much like the many others who rejected the amendments, feared that previously well-organized and well funded groups will be in a stronger position to contest parliamentary elections in half a year time than groups confronted by the job of transforming themselves from protest movements into political parties   hard task. Indeed, there ray ban sale was clearly nothing regarding the post Mubarak order that you will find easy, but many Egyptians firmly belief that whatever the result of their revolution it must be better than the Mubarak era.

You will find there's tendency to believe that Egyptians rebelled against Mubarak in early 2011. That maybe true, but it is not entirely accurate. They revolted against a regime   a political order   he led, but that Mubarak inherited from Sadat who had inherited it from Nasser.

It was a system that was founded within the ideological and power politics from the early 1950s, in the event the Free Officers discovered they might dispose of their opponents through nondemocratic laws, rules, regulations and decrees. Egyptians unexpectedly cracked open that regime oakley sunglasses outlet clearance sale and dislodged its caretaker   Mubarak   but for the first time in sixty years offer an opportunity to define Egypt because they desire rather than as a line of now discredited military officers have defined it.

All the questions that Egyptians happen to be asking themselves: What is Egypt? What principles and values should guide Egypt at home and abroad? What is the role of religion and nationalism in the life of the continent? ray ban aviators sale What kind of foreign policy should Egypt pursue? Can Egypt be a regional leader again?

Suddenly Egyptians   through their unique bravery and dignity   gave themselves an opportunity to provide their own answers to these questions. Without having a compelling and coherent account of Egyptian society and politics in response, their extraordinary efforts could possibly be for naught. Indeed, it is entirely possible that Egypt's elections, the seating of an new parliament, or perhaps the inauguration of an elected president will swiftly not matter oakley sunglasses wholesale much.

Although among the vast majority, there is certainly great hope that Egyptians can create a new political system and rebuild their society peacefully, that's unlikely as long as the underlying and antecedent debates about Egypt precisely what it is short for remain unresolved. No one is able of finding out how this process will unfold or how much time it will take.

Inside the immediate post revolutionary period it is clear how the contest over legitimacies will be the first step as to what will likely be a bruising battle to define Egypt. Consequently, it really is extraordinarily tough to determine how the nation will end up. For the present time, one thing is clear: the struggle for Egypt continues.
